A Journey’s End: Finding a New Purpose

Changing Roles, Tiger Cruises, and More This Mother's Day is the first without my Mom and this has led to much introspection as we arrive at Commissioning Week. As Moms and Dads we have a definite purpose - to raise our kids, take care of our families, and manage our careers to allow for the …

When the Going Gets Tough…

It's Time to Reevaluate Priorities It's that time of year when six week exams have passed and your Plebe may or may not be happy about the results. Grades are out and some Plebes may be ecstatic, but for some Plebes, there may be disappointment with their performance. Add to that preparing and having to …

The Yard from Different Angles | Episode 8

In my book, A USNA Mom's Journal - Plebe Summer through Commissioning and Beyond: Everything you need to Know, I talk about our N*avy journey being uniquely different - a N*ot College Journey. In that journey we meet many special people that become lifetime friends, mentors, and Battle Buddies even. There are some people to …

Embrace the Suck and Other Words of Wisdom | Episode 7

Hoping for Sunshine, Sea Trials, and Herndon

It has been a difficult spring for Mids on the Yard.  ROM and a tough message from leadership has been rough on morale. But vaccines are making the rounds and sunshiny days are sure to arrive as spring moves in and Athletic activities return to the Yard. Here are some things to consider. As I …

ROM: Plebe Summer 2.0?

What? ROM. Again…? Frustration, isolation, added difficulty, and lack of communication are just some words that come to mind.  To say that this year has been difficult is an understatement, especially for USNA parents and their Midshipmen at N*ot College, as well as military parents in general.  As I discuss in my book A USNA …

Irritable and Argumentative Goodbyes

Bob Peterson Photography

I remembers not too long ago preparing for my children to return to the Yard and as their leave was ending, being awash in nostalgia. My husband and I often counsel other US Naval Academy parents about what to expect at certain times, and beginning on I-Day or any time after spending time with family …

The Anomaly – A Year without Closure

Photo: Courtesy of Bob Peterson Photography I have written on this before.  Yes - 2020 is the year of the anomaly for so many reasons. Change is the one word that describes 2020 for me. Change in expectations, in plans, in the future of things, of hellos and goodbyes, and in our journey. Who would …
